September's show brings Tony Baker, PK Mayo, and Erik Brandt to the Freemore Stage. Admission is Free. Songwriters in the Round starts promptly at 7pm. Seating is limited, so please arrive early! This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the East Central Regional Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. Thank you! Tony Baker: I’m a rockabilly guitarist/ songwriter leading a duo sometimes trio called The StarChiefs since 2009.Performing roughly sixty shows a year doing the standards of the genre as well as mixing in my originals at events big and small.Im influenced by Hank Williams, Brian Setzer, and many others .I enjoy entertaining and introducing this style of music to new audiences. One of my songs, “Two Carburators” finished in the top 16 world wide in the 2022 Rockabilly Alliance Songwriters Competition. PK Mayo : A native son of northern Minnesota, PK Mayo grew up by a lake near the mining town of Eveleth. From an early age, when he was known as Paul Kennedy Mayasich, he soaked up a wide range of diverse styles of music coming over the airwaves of the local college radio station, KUMD. He has spent the majority of his life since then following the muse of that sound while recording, writing, singing and playing while stepping on the stage 200+ shows a year. He's racked up a shelf of awards, including induction into both the Minnesota Blues Hall of Fame and the Minnesota Rock & Country Hall of Fame. His original song, Arms of the Blues, won a Minnesota Music Award for best blues recording. Touring and playing around the country and world has honed PK Mayo's guitar skills to a razor's edge. His abilities playing slide guitar, both acoustic and electric, his rare touch, feel and dynamism on his varied stringed instruments combined with his accomplished original songwriting, and soulful vocals quickly shows PK Mayo is the complete package. His music is an aural quilt built of what is today called the Americana genre: country, rock & Roll, blues, and folk - all shaken and stirred into a satisfying musical brew. Website: pkmayo.com Erik Brandt has been the ringleader of the award-winning eclectic Twin Cities-based Urban Hillbilly Quartet since 1995. By night, he plays music. By day, he teaches English at Harding High School in St. Paul. He’s played in venues all over the USA, Canada, Australia, and on various street corners throughout Europe. He’s also taught high school Shakespeare, rudimentary grammar, haikus and standardized test prep. On stage, Erik performs mainly original material drawn from the Americana vein. Most of his original tunes can be found on the nine albums he’s recorded with the UHQ and his three solo albums, including his latest, The Long Winter.
